Applying Student Development Theory to College Counseling & Advising
Student retention and persistence are influenced by more than academic performance. Students must also navigate transitions, develop confidence, build supportive relationships, understand institutional expectations, and feel that they belong within the college environment. As a future college counselor and advisor, I believe student development theory provides an important foundation for understanding these experiences and creating intentional support strategies. My approach combines Schlossberg’s Transition Theory, Chickering’s Theory of Identity Development, and Rendón’s Validation Theory with proactive advising, Tinto’s persistence framework, and belonging-centered support to help students remain enrolled and continue progressing toward their educational goals.
